About Orthodontics

Orthodontic specialists can help you when you have misaligned teeth, a problem with your bite, or are looking for a more confident smile.

Misaligned teeth:Crowded, gapped, asymmetrical or crooked teeth.
Malocclusion:The upper row of teeth does not fit properly with the lower row of teeth, e.g., a bristling, backward or open bite.
Developmental problems in children:Habits such as finger-sucking or a lack of co-ordination between the upper and lower jaw bones may lead to dental problems in the future.

Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic Treatment Overview

Early Rehabilitation for Children

  • Pre-orthodontic
    • Time for treatment:This is done during the golden age of bone development when children are changing their teeth (6-12 years old).
    • Therapeutic purposes:Prevention is better than cure. By intervening early, we can guide the jawbone to grow properly, making room for future permanent teeth and avoiding more complicated orthodontics in adulthood.

  • Functional Orthodontics
    • Therapeutic Tools:This is a special orthodontic device used mainly in the pre-orthodontic stage.
    • Therapeutic purposes:Solve the problem of upper and lower jawbone developmental mismatch (e.g., bruxism or inverted teeth), and restore the facial shape and bite to a harmonious one.

Orthodontics for Teens and Adults

  • Transparency and Fixed Correction
    • Therapeutic Tools:This is the core method of aligning your teeth.
    • Therapeutic purposes:For permanent teeth that have already grown in, clear orthodontics (aesthetically invisible) or fixed orthodontics (traditional precision) are used to move the teeth, solving problems such as tooth crowding and malocclusion, and achieving both functional and aesthetic improvements.

Detailed Orthodontic Treatment Procedure

What is the orthodontic treatment process?

01

Initial Diagnosis and Assessment

This is the starting point and the most crucial step in any treatment.

  1. Comprehensive Oral Examination:Your dentist will look at your oral condition, periodontal health and medical history through an intra- and extra-oral examination.
  2. 3D digital diagnosis:Get a three-dimensional view of your mouth, bones, nerves and blood vessels with a 3D computed tomography (CT) scanner or 3D intraoral scanner.
  3. Develop a customised treatment plan:Based on all the data from the examination, the dentist will discuss with you and explain in detail the treatment plan, costs and expected results.
  4. Biopsies of living tissue:If any unexplained lumps or lesions are found in the mouth during the examination, the dentist will perform biopsy at this stage to obtain a diagnosis for subsequent treatment.

02

Preoperative Preparation and Surgery

This stage is the key to orthodontic treatment, and the most appropriate treatment will be chosen based on your age and the condition of your teeth.

  1. Pre-correction: If you or your child is in the teething stage (approximately 6-12 years of age), we recommend early orthodontic treatment. The main goal at this stage is to guide the jawbone to develop properly to make room for future permanent teeth.
  2. Functional orthodontic appliances: This is a common tool used in the early orthodontic stage to guide the growth of the upper and lower jaw bones, and to solve the problem of bruxism or inverted teeth due to developmental disharmony.
  3. Transparent with fixed correction: If you are a teenager or an adult, your dentist will choose between the two primary types of orthodontics based on your needs. Fixed orthodontics move teeth and solve complex problems, while clear orthodontics allow you to maintain your aesthetics and social life during orthodontic treatment.

03

Maintenance and Tracking

Good maintenance after correction is complete is the key to ensuring results.

  1. Maintainer Fitting: Once your teeth have moved into their ideal position, your dentist will make a retainer for you. This ensures that your teeth won't run back into their original positions and that the results of your hard work will last for a long time.
  2. Regular return visits: We will arrange for you to have regular visits to check the status of your retainer and the stability of your teeth.
